Moving West – Life in Alberta

  • Location: John P. Crabb Gallery (Pavilion Gallery Museum)
  • Opening Date: August 19, 2013
  • Closing Date: January 26, 2014

After moving to Canada in 1913 Walter J. Phillips spent more than 30 years travelling between Winnipeg and Lake of the Woods, painting the landscape around him and teaching at the very new Winnipeg School of Art. He made several trips to the west, most notably Banff, Alberta in 1926, and in 1946 decided to build a home there. In 1948, he secured a teaching position at the Banff School of Fine Arts where he worked and painted the mountains and lakes for nearly two decades. It was after “moving west” that Phillips’ personal style was fully developed and his most exquisite watercolours were produced.
