Park Tots

Workshop - Park Tots

Explore the wonderland of Assiniboine Park with Park Tots!

Designed for children ages 3 -5 and their adult companion, each week we'll cover a seasonal nature topic with early childhood development professional Kim Crockett to teach both adults and children interesting lessons and hands-on experiences about nature. You'll leave with more knowledge and skills you can use in every day life, as well as memories shared with your children through play.

Portions of the program will occur indoors and outdoors. Please come with clothes appropriate for outdoor play, a water bottle and a snack.

Exploring the Edible Mushrooms of Manitoba

Workshop - Exploring the Edible Mushrooms of Manitoba

Join naturalist and mushroom enthusiast Donna Kurt as she details how to identify the edible mushrooms of Manitoba, including morels, chanterelles, boletes, chicken of the woods, and honey mushrooms, and how to distinguish their toxic look-alikes. This workshop will include tips and techniques on successfully foraging for mushrooms.

About the Facilitator
Donna Kurt gained knowledge from 40 years of outdoor experience, leading hundreds of canoe camping trips, backpacking trips, and related exposure. She has studied mushrooms, plants, lichens, mosses, etc., through biology, mycology, ecology, ethnobotany, and food systems courses offered at the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba since 2015. Donna also received an International Permaculture Design certificate in 2017 through the University of Manitoba and gained experience from mushroom workshops and forays led by Dr. David Punter of the University of Manitoba.

She wants to share her knowledge and foster community after leading many mushroom workshops and forays. She is one of the founding members of the Manitoba Mushroom Society.

Workshop - Garden Sound Bath Healing Experience

Surround yourself in the beautiful essence of the Seasonal Garden as you indulge in a deeply restorative experience that rejuvenates mind, body, and spirit. This immersive session begins with a calming guided meditation, setting the tone for tranquility. Throughout, you'll be treated to soothing aromatherapy anointments and misting, enhancing your relaxation journey.

As you drift deeper into relaxation, a symphony of sound healing will envelop you, featuring the gentle vibrations of crystal quartz singing bowls, brass bowls, tingsha bells, chakra tuning forks, chimes, and Ocean drums. This harmonious blend is designed to melt away stress and leave you feeling renewed. The session will gently conclude with a guided meditation, bringing you back to a state of calm and clarity.

Please dress in comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat, pillow, blanket, and a water bottle.

About the Facilitator
Brie Henderson has been leading sound baths for over five years throughout Manitoba and Ontario. She provides experiences at a variety of yoga studios, spas, and her own private studio.

Workshop - Just Roll with It - The Art of Sushi Rolling

Get rolling in this fun, hands-on sushi workshop!

This workshop will teach you the basics of preparing and assembling your own delicious rolls. You'll also learn about sushi rice, rolling techniques, and ingredients, then dive in and create your own sushi from scratch, among other delights.

Come hungry and leave with the skills (and confidence) to recreate your own sushi night at home!

About the Facilitator
Sadao Ono was one of Winnipeg's original food innovators and the owner and Chef of Edohei. He has taught classes throughout Winnipeg and is an active member of JCAM (Japanese Cultural Association of Manitoba).

Shinrin Yoku - The Art of Forest Bathing

Workshop - Shinrin Yoku - The Art of Forest Bathing

Discover the renewed ancient practice of forest bathing with certified Forest Therapy Guide Brynne Maguire at The Grove at the Gardens at The Leaf.

Participants will discover the science and origin of Shinrin Yoku (forest bathing) and learn its benefits for the mind, body, and spirit. During this one-hour guided experience, a series of sensory experiences and meditation prompts will be shared as participants journey inward through the Park's forests. 

About the Facilitator
Brynne Maguire is the first certified forest therapy guide in Manitoba. A keen outdoor enthusiast, Brynne has a background in outdoor recreation with degrees in Environmental Studies, Health Promotion and Recreation Facilitation.

Please dress for the weather. This workshop is geared for those 12 years old and up.

Junior Chefs Academy - Ice Cream Cone Cake Pops

Workshop - Junior Chefs Academy - Ice Cream Cone Cake Pops

In this hands-on workshop, kids ages 8-12, with their adult companion, will team up to make ice cream cone cake pops; they look like ice cream cones, but it's actually cake! We'll cover basic cake pop techniques, easy decorating tips, and creative ways to make each treat one-of-a-kind. No baking experience needed - just bring your creativity and your sweet tooth!

All supplies included - don't forget your reusable container to take home leftover treats.

About the Facilitator
Victoria Nguyen began to bake in high school as a way to show her love to others and was soon whipping up treats for everyone she knew. She has been with Assiniboine Park Conservancy for four years, where she started as a volunteer and now works for the Education team. Victoria is going into her fourth year in the University of Winnipeg's integrated program of Education. She has been running cooking programs for the Seven Oaks School Division, and loves sharing her enthusiasm with young chefs.

Stretch and flow with Assiniboine Park's own Jackie Enberg in this weekly slow flow practice.

This class is accessible to students of all experience levels.

About the Instructor
Instructor Jackie Enberg is certified in Vinyasa Flow and Restorative yoga. Jackie has been connected to the Park all her life, growing up close to the park, and as an animal care curator, is proud to call the Zoo her career for almost 20 years.

The Living Well Program - Celebrate Spring

Workshop - The Living Well Program - Celebrate Spring

Welcome the joys of spring with The Living Well Program, a nature-based experience designed for individuals living with mild to moderate signs of dementia and their care partners.

Guided by a horticultural therapy practitioner, we'll explore slow birding, a peaceful and accessible way to connect with birds and nature. We'll also enjoy gentle walks on paved pathways, sensory nature activities, and guided visits to the English Garden, Leo Mol Sculpture Garden, and Riley Family Duck Pond. Every session includes refreshments.

This program is in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.

Booking & Cancellation Policies

  • Registration fees are non-refundable (unless the program or tour is cancelled by Assiniboine Park Conservancy).
  • Pre-registration and payment for programs and workshops is encouraged to ensure we have sufficient staff and materials for attendees. Sorry, we cannot accept walk-ups for programs and workshops unless otherwise specified. Walk-ups are welcome for tours, space permitting.
  • Programs and workshops are subject to demand. If enrollment is insufficient, Assiniboine Park Conservancy reserves the right to cancel a workshop up to one week in advance.
