In October, we honoured the founding chair of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, Hartley Richardson, with a tribute in front of The Pavilion.

Hartley Richardson has made a tremendous impact on Assiniboine Park, making not only the Park but our city, a better place. We are proud to have a tribute to Mr. Richardson in the Park, commemorating his lasting impact on our community.

Hartley Richardson was the founding Chair of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy from 2008 until 2022.

In the 1990s, Mr. Richardson led efforts to create the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden and restore the iconic Pavilion. Later, as Chair, he helped craft the vision for the future of the Park and Zoo and led fundraising efforts to support their revitalization.

“These achievements are gifts not only to Winnipeggers, and not only to Canadians but to visitors from all across the world,” wrote Mayor Scott Gillingham.

Under his leadership, the Imagine a Place Campaign inspired unprecedented generosity in support of a decade-long transformation of the Park, culminating with the establishment of the Journey to Churchill exhibit and the opening of The Leaf.

The transformation of Assiniboine Park into the thriving community gathering space that we know today, would not have been possible without his dedication.

“Mr. Richardson’s commitment to the Park is truly phenomenal and is an expression of his desire to make our community a better place,” said Ray Karasevich, President, and CEO of Assiniboine Park Conservancy.

On behalf of all who visit Assiniboine Park, we offer our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Richardson for his tireless commitment to this extraordinary place.

In Mr. Richardson’s own words, “The entire Park brings me a sense of pride and the greatest joy I get is seeing the faces of people who are here with their families, and it makes it all worthwhile.”
