Halloween is a great time to enjoy our favourite treats, but it can be far from delightful for the creatures that call the tropical forests their home, such as the White-handed Gibbon. Palm oil, a product in many candies and chocolates, is often not sustainably farmed in the wild and can cause deforestation, biodiversity loss, and other environmental impacts.

To help ensure that you’re getting treats from companies who support sustainable practices, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado created an app that can help called PalmOil Scan. All you do is scan any food barcode within the app. It will tell you if the product is made by a company that supports sustainable palm oil farming practices.

They also released a sustainable palm oil list of candies for various holidays. Below are current Halloween candy and chocolate brands whose companies are committed to making a difference by using certified sustainable palm oil:

  • Hershey
  • Skittles
  • Twix
  • Starburst
  • Crunch
  • Jolly Rancher
  • M&M’s
  • Butterfinger
  • Haribo
  • Twizzlers
  • Snickers
  • Dover
  • LifeSavers
  • Reese’s
  • Almond Joy
