We are so excited for you to meet Lumi.
After a long journey of recovery, Lumi the lynx has moved into her new habitat at the Grasslands & Boreal Forest section of the Zoo, across from the bison habitat. Her story is one of resilience and hope.
In 2025, Lumi was rescued by our partners at Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre after her mother was killed by a dog, leaving her injured and orphaned. Following extensive veterinary assessments, it was determined that she could not be released back to the wild due to sustained eye injuries and a seizure disorder. After months of intensive medical care, she was transferred to her new home at the Zoo.
Since her arrival, our veterinary team has worked diligently to further assess and address her medical needs.
Lumi has eye abnormalities that affect her vision. This winter, she had a minor surgery to correct an inward-rolling eyelid. She is receiving ongoing treatment and monitoring from our veterinary team and a specialized veterinary ophthalmologist, and may require additional surgery as she grows. She also has a seizure disorder, which is managed with medication and will require lifelong treatment.
On June 3, 2026, she moved into her new habitat with the help of Premier Wab Kinew, who first joined the Wildlife Haven team when Lumi was transferred to the Zoo in March.
Lumi has quickly made herself at home. She has been busy exploring, rolling around, and doing zoomies - enjoying all the new sights, sounds, and specialized enrichment that her habitat has to offer.
Now, she will serve as an ambassador for her wild counterparts at the Zoo. When you visit Lumi, we hope your connection to this incredible Canadian species grows and inspires you to protect our local wildlife and ecosystems.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved in Lumi’s care and recovery. Your dedication has given this little lynx a second chance at life. Thank you to everyone who has loved and supported Lumi from a distance through encouragement, kind words, and donations.
Stop by her habitat on your next visit to the Zoo, open daily from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
