Did you know we have approximately 750 poinsettias in this year’s holiday display?
These beautiful plants are commonly kept around the holidays, but they can be grown outdoors during the summer.
Here are some tips for keeping your poinsettia healthy and beautiful this holiday season:
Light & Temperature: Poinsettias need bright daylight! Put your plant in a south, east, or west facing window where it will receive light all day. Avoid putting your poinsettia in an area where the temperature fluctuates, 65-70 degrees F is ideal! Your plant will suffer if they are exposed to temperatures below 50 degrees F.
Watering: Poinsettias require regular waterings, keeping the soil moist. Water your plant when the soil feels dry to the touch! Make sure your poinsettia is in a pot that drains freely, plants sitting in excess water can cause root rot. (link to root rot)
Plant Food: You don’t need to fertilize your poinsettia over the holidays! Instead, start fertilizing your plant when you see new growth. An all-purpose household plant fertilizer works best at half the recommended strength.
Fun Facts:
· Poinsettias bloom as the days get shorter, making them a great holiday plant!
· The coloured part of the plant is a leaf, not a flower!
· Poinsettias need both bright light and dark nights to bloom.
· Poinsettias can grow up to 15 feet tall.
