Happy Lunar New Year! In honour of the Year of the Snake, here are a few slithering fun facts, featuring yellow anacondas and boa constrictors, both of which you can see at the Zoo!

  • Radar, our yellow anaconda, is 10 years old, and Heads & Tails, our boa constrictors, are 5 and 16 years old!
  • Anacondas are semi-aquatic, so Radar greatly enjoys pool time!
  • Anacondas and boa constrictors are non-venomous, they constrict their prey with their bodies. They also have heat sensing pits to help them detect their prey.
  • Yellow anacondas are a viviparous snake species, which means they do not lay eggs - they give birth to live young! Research has shown that yellow anacondas give birth to an average of 24 babies in each litter.

On your next visit to the Zoo, come on by to Toucan Ridge to say hi to Radar, Heads, and Tails!
