Conservation Story: Their population in the wild is near threatened due to decreased habitat from livestock farming and ranching, as well as hunting and trapping in the exotic pet trade.
Responsible Pet Ownership: Ball pythons are the most popular breed of pet snake, but due to extensive needs such as their diet, habitat and reptile care, they are often surrendered to rescues. Ensure before getting a pet snake that you can care for its entire life – or come see James Bean, our ball python and animal ambassador, during the day at the Zoo's Kinsmen Discovery Centre!
