Conservation Status: Vulnerable (IUCN Red List)  

Wild Range: Eastern Himalayas at elevations of up to 4300 m

Diet: Grasses, bamboo shoots, tree leaves, pine bark

Longevity in the wild: 16–18 years

Size: 100–140 cm (height at the shoulder)

Weight: 300 kg 

Fun Fact: Takins make vertical migrations! During the summer they live in high altitude alpine meadows. In winter they migrate down to forested valleys where food is more plentiful.

Conservation Story: Takins are threatened by human activities, such as farming and mining, that fragment their habitat and disrupt their migration routes. Their horns are also valued in the illegal wildlife trade, which makes Takins the target of poachers.
