Stroll around the outer edge of The Leaf’s Mediterranean Biome and look down – you might just find our beautiful Echeveria at your feet! Dive into the world of this evergreen plant below:

Basics: Echeveria is the genus of around 150 succulent plant species in the Crassulaceae family. This plant grows in a condensed bunch because it grows clustered around the parent plant and blooms yearly. Its leaves store water, have a waxy, velvety, or powdery surface, and can come in various colours such as blue, green, greyish-pink, and red.

Habitat: They are native to remote, mountainous terrains from Mexico, Central America, and northwestern South America, making them right at home in the Mediterranean Biome. They can grow on rock faces and cliff ledges!

Caring for Your Own: If your home has sunny areas, they are a great addition to your indoor plant collection and are lower maintenance to care for! They enjoy bright, indirect sunlight and modest watering, but be careful – only water them when they feel dry.

Fun Facts:

  • They can easily be propagated – separate their offsets!
  • Echeveria was named for Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy, a botanical illustrator.
  • They can be grown outside and look beautiful in your garden, but they don’t like the cold, so bring them back in before a frost hits.
