Tiger Bark Ficus (Ficus microcarpa) are one of the many bonsai trees featured in our display at The Leaf, Yasuragi: Gardens of Japan.
Because of its unique appearance, it is one of the most popular bonsai tree types. This visually striking variety of bonsai gets its name from the eye-catching bark patterns that resemble tiger stripes.
Appearance: The Tiger Bark Ficus has a rugged and knotted trunk with rough patches of bark ranging from pale beige to reddish brown. Small, shiny, dark green leaves add contrast against the bark. The leaves create a canopy that can be pruned and shaped, allowing artistic expression.
Growth: The Tiger Bark Ficus can grow to be 12-24 inches tall. When properly cared for, this tree can develop aerial roots, enhancing its appearance.
Light and Water Requirements: Tiger Bark Ficus thrives in well-drained soil and needs regular watering to moisten the soil—the tree benefits from bright, indirect light or partial shade.
Temperature and Humidity: This tree prefers a warm and humid environment.
With proper care, some species of bonsai can live for centuries!
